Inspiration

I really liked this pose that I found in a shoot in ASOS magazine. I want to try it out for my pastel trend. As I want it to look fun and youthful.

Photoshoot planning

I want my photos to look clean and editorial so I will be using a white background for my shoots. Im going to take a few options for outfits so that I can experiment with different colours and prints. I want the lighting to be sharp so wont shine the light directly on my model but will light the background by turning the lights to the ceiling and letting the light bounce from there back to my model, creating a soft lighting.

ASOS summer magazine

Pastels are featured in ASOS' s summer magazine that I received this morning. A marc jacobs advertisement shows pastel pink jewellery and watches, showing pastels coming in to summer in the way of accessories.  There is also a double paged spread on how to wear pastels- mixing them up with matalics and neon colours. There are 4 different looks for differemt occasions 2 casual and 2 for going out. This tips page is really good for advice on how to wear pastels in a different way, mixing trends up and being a bit more adventurous. The last page on pastels shows a mint green pastel colour mixed with stick on gems and pearls- adding girly glamour to any outfit.

Pastel mood board- final

This is my final mood board for my Pastel trend called 'Romantic pastels'. I decided to call the trend romantic pastels because I feel that the pastel trend has been heavily inspired by the 20's where the pastels where usted and 'romantic'. I was inspired by the boards that I looked up and used the images that I liked from my Pinterest board. I used the pictures to create my colour palette, using some muted colours and mixing them with brighter contemporary ones. I feel that the top 3 images explain my trend easily, the left shows a romantic set all in pastel colours, the second showing a range of pastel colours and the last showing how pastels can be interpreted and used for a contemporary outfit. The rest show how pastels are used in lifestyle and beauty- showing that pastels can be used in many aspects of 'fashion' and lifestyle.
Im very pleased with my board, and feel that you understand the concept straight away, the pictures all contain the same colour palette, making the board flow easily.

Target market of Pastel trend

I think that the Pastel trend can be adapted to be suited for all ages. Younger people can use vibrant pastel colours, mix them up and experiment with them. This year pastels have been adapted to hair colour and makeup- this could carry on to next year- and be used by younger people daring enough to try it.
I think that pastels will be evident in most shops that follow trends closely- e.g. topshop, miss selfridge (for younger people who want to be daring or very girly) and M&S, oasis and warehouse (for mature women who want to appear classy and dress age appropriate)

The more mature woman can still follow the trend by using statement pieces, such as statement trousers or jewellery, if she didn't feel confident enough to wear all pastel. Although I think that a pastel pant suit is very flattering for s/s as its fresh and can make you appear more youthful. You just have to be careful about how you wear it- wearing a fitted statement blazer can be flattering and on trend.- shown by the catwalk picture below.

Paramore- new video

I was watching the some music videos and came across a new video from the band Paramore. the whole video features pastel colours- mutes pinks, purples, blues and yellows are used in the background. while the band members where brighter pastel colours- as you can see the lead singer has pink and orange hair. she also has a blazer on that mixes pastel pink and blue, paired with a high waisted pale pink skater skirt (which is bang on trend this season)
This video shows how pastels are a big trend this year, and forecasting shows that it will be a reoccurring trend next year.

I love the layout of the set on the left- how the birthday cakes all have pastel icing on, mixed with the pastel colours of the decor! (if i could have a room like this i would!) its so light and fresh- showing that pastel

colours work on furnature and decor, aswell as garments.

Valentino pre-summer 2013- Vogue

Valentino also used bright pastel colours in his collection, making them feminine by mixing them with florals and lace, making them classic and elegant, inspired by the 1920's, but made more modern by using vibrant pastels instead of muted ones. The lace and florals link with the romantic style of the garment, making it really girly. The high necklines where also typical in the 20's to cover up the body- mainly the bust, which is how women of that era used to dress (covering their modesty) as most people where religious and it was 'the done thing'.
I love the matching pastel clutch bags that match the corresponding outfits- using the same colour- bringing out the colour in the garment that has been muted by the overlay of white lace (this creates a very classic garment)

Salvatore Ferragamo- Pre S/S 13- Vogue

Ferragamo used pastels in his pre summer collection, mixed with a lot of snake print- bringing a contemporary twist to pastel colour. the snake skin print goes really well with pastel colours, because its a soft fluid print, when mixed with the pastel colour, the 2 tone effect looks really nice on a garment, creating a statement piece which can be worn by all ages.

M. Patmos- pre S/S 13- Vogue

Patmos used this beautiful mint green pastel colour in her pre summer collection. its clean and fresh, perfect for spring. this colour goes great with white, creating a simple look, the white also makes the green pop, especially when used as a statement piece.

Rachel Zoe- Pre S/S 13- Vogue

Rachel Zoe featured some beautiful pastels in her new collection. the pale peach outfit on the right features different tones of pastel peach. Paired with the feather bower, this outfit screams 50's glamour, made contemporary by the tailored trousers and blouse. In the right picture the peach is used again, but is paired with a duck egg blue summer dress. The long length resembles a 20's cut, lose fitting and pleated, the dress is girly and classy.

Channel Catwalk WGSN

Channels new collection features mostly monochrome colours. But I wanted to include this dress, it seems as though the 'romantic' and girly concept has been taken, by using the lilac colour and the flower print. the fabric itself has been synched in twice, once at the waist and another at the ankle, to create a kind of 'puffball' effect. But the black underlay, makeup and headpiece make the dress seem more 'dark fairytale' than feminine and girly- another twist that makes the 'romantic' theme/trend contemporary. It seems as though the romantic theme and pastel trend seem to tie in together- as they are both girly. the romantic trend heavily features muted pastels. but this garment seems more gothic.

Dior catwalk WGSN

Following my research into pastels, I found some contemporary designers on WGSN that featured pastel colours in their S/S collection.

Dior features Mint green, peach and a pale pink pastel colours in his new collection.

The bottom 2 dresses also remind me of the pale pink ball-gown that i found when researching 50's glamour, but instead of the skirt extending out from the waist, they extend from the hips. giving them a more contemporary twist to the 50's style.

The picture on the left shows a pale pink dress, embroidered with orange cluster beads on the right side, also paired with bright orange tights, taking a new spin on the pastel trend but also keeping it quite simple.

The Roaring 20's WGSN

I found a report on WGSN about fashion in the 20's coming back into fashion due to the release of the film the Great Gatsby. the trend report shows that muted pastel colours are predicted for A/W 13/14. and i believe that this trend will extend into S/S 14/15. The feminine cuts and extravagant beading will follow into spring. leaving the fur behind in winter, the muted pastels will become brighter coming into spring/summer.

1950's Hollywood Glamour- pastel

The 50's where all about glamour- mainly in Hollywood, as Britain was still recovering from the war. Women wanted to look feminine, much like the 20's. The pastel colours soften your appearance, working towards a classic and elegant appearance that women of the time aimed for. the classic look was also achieved by wearing simple makeup- usually red lips, defined eyebrows and a dark lash.

(main pastel colours that achieve classic elegance- blue, pink, lilac and pale yellow)

I love the lace detail of the dress on the left, the pale pink makes it girly and fairytale like- this is also created by the synched in waist and the underskirt which makes the dress flow out creating a full skirt.
I love the detail on the dress on the left, the scrunched up fabric in the contrasting yellow draws the eye to the waist, adding something extra to the dress, making it look more extravagant.

1920's Romance- pastel

I wanted to find out the history of pastel colours. And I started in the 20's, fashion garments where heavily embellished, 'romantic' and pastel colours where very popular. The colours where soft and the fabrics where floaty and lose. Women appeared very feminine in the 20's, they wanted to look elegant and lady like. Fur was also used, although it was expensive at the time, it was associated with glamour and wealth.

This dress is a perfect example, its lose fitting, the peach colour is complimented by the duck egg blue ribbon and the embellished flowers sewn in dusky pink and green. The lace makes the dress even more feminine, tying it all together.

Pastel board inspiration

I found these moodboards on google, and was hoping that they would give me some inspiration on how to layout my board. and which colour pastels to go for!

I love how the mood board on the left has a romantic, 'lovely' feel to it. which links to the trend i found on WGSN at the start of the project which was Century romance a/w 13 14, that i looked at early on in the project. the board in the top left focuses mainly on pastel pink and duck egg blue, relating the colours to the shoes that they are advertising.

I love the board to my right. it focuses on a range of pastel colours, without it appearing childish- the colour palette is accessible for all ages. the florals and lace create a girly, romantic scene. i would like to create a board like this, without it being overly cluttered and i would include a colour palette.

This board reminds me of 1920's glamour, with headpieces, dusky pink as the main colour and a lot of ruffles and pleated dresses. i think that this board is more romantic than it is pastel, more spring in its colours, as it focuses mainly on pinks and browns. i like the simplicity of the board. it is clearly laid out and you get the theme straight away.

Pastel board- first draft

This is my first draft of my pastel mood board. I don't think that it works very well, the dark pastels look almost washed out, compared to the vibrant pastels at the bottom. I think I need to go back to the drawing board, and look for some inspiration!!! I like the colours at the bottom, so I may use them in my final board, i also like the pictures at the bottom. its almost like the two sections of the board should be separate, like young for the bottom and the more mature woman at the top. but this isn't the kind of board that i want to create.
