Trend Tablet research- Mathias Sterner

I was looking on Trend Tablet when I came across this photographer- Mathias Sterner, a sweedish photographer and I thought his photographs where beautiful. In this shoot, the model looks like something out of a fairytale- with a modern twist. He is known for being inspired by nature, and you can see that in this shoot as there seems to be moss growing from the models legs.

I thought that by looking at some photography, it may inspire me for my own photo shoot for styling. I think these photos are great, as they feature different and unusual poses, and show how an unusual outfit has been created.

Trend Tablet research- Ernesto Neto

Ernesto Neto is a contemporary artist from Brazil, who has created an instillation to go into Louis Vuitton's store in Tokyo.

"Inspired by Brazilian Neo-concretism, a movement in the 50s and 60s that rejected modernism and its geometric abstraction, Neto's work resembles living organisms and an organic architecture. As described by the artist, his work is an exploration of the body's landscape from within.

His work is primarily exhibited in large exhibitions, where the abstract installations grow and often fill the entire space. Pourous and stretchy nylon or cotton fabrics create a skin around wooden skeletons or hang from the ceiling like tear drops. These materials are often filled with spices, inviting the spectator not only to touch the work but also smell and sense it. In other works, the material is used to make organic structures itself.
Neto has been awarded Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his installation at the Panthéon in Paris called Leviathan Thot. In 2009 the artist exhibited at New York's Park Avenue Armory, filling the 5,100 square meter hall with a maze-like structure.

His latest installation is for the Louis Vuitton store in Tokyo, where visitors were invited to walk on and interact with a suspended pathway made from his stretchable material."

This structure reminded me of my eastern colour palette, the oranges, greens, reds and the organic materials make me think of eastern culture- that could have been found in africa, or India. they look like food bags- that are used to collect fruit. I love the structure of the piece and found the colours really inspiring for my A/W trend.

Trend Research from Peclers

Ive had a look at some colour palettes on Peclers to see if they predict the same colours as I've predicted for my pastel and Eastern trends... and they have :)
The deep oranges and browns fit perfectly with my eastern inspired trend for A/W 14- with the addition of red and green that add an earthy tone, I can easily create an outfit with colours inspired by my trend.

Pastels will be massive for  S/S 14, they've been introduced this summer but i think people are still a bit weary of being bold with pastels. So next year it will come out in FORCE! Pastels bring in summer, as they are fresh and easy to incorporate into your wardrobe.

Oz inspired makeup

I recently went to see OZ the film (which was amazing) and found that urban decay has bought out a range of makeup inspired by the good and bad witches in the film. The colour pallettes represent each witch, I love them and think the colours are lovely! Darker colours for the bad witch and neutral,  softer colours for the good (I think id like both if im honest!)

Colour palette

This oddity colour palette predicted by WGSN for autumn/winter will tie in perfectly for my prediction of eastern culture A/W 14. The reds and oranges remind me of african print colours that have been toned down to suit A/W rather than S/S. Even the way that this prediction has been styled, looks as though it has been inspired by eastern culture- the patterns and small colour swatches

Pastel

Found this street style in look magazine, showing a lady wearing a pastel mac- showing that pastels are very popular this season, and i think it will carry on to next year.

News research

In today's lesson we looked through some broadsheets to see what current news could effect the fashion industry on the whole.
One article was about tax free ISAs for children, which are being set up by their parents at an early age. Showing that their parents wont be spending money on materialistic things. But in the future their children may be doing so if they are free of debt because of the money that has been saved for them.
Second was an article on how dogs are seen as a fashion accessory. People have been spending more money on their dogs- getting a designer pooch. As many people are having children later in life, dogs fill the void in the early part of their life.
Thirdly was an article on how high street dresses are giving designer's a run for their money. As a dress from h&m was seen on the red carpet. Making the high street more popular when endorsed by celebrities.
Lastly was an article on gym wear. A company had admitted that their yoga pants where too see-through. Having designer gym wear is becoming more popular as people are more concerned about having a healthy lifestyle.

Mood board examples

Here are dome examples of mood boards, to help me create my own!

Eastern Promise (BREAKTHROUGH)

Ive found a designer that has created a collection that is exactly what i'm looking for to support my prediction for A/W/ 14. Clements Ribeiro have used patterns and print, mixed with dark tones to bring back the eastern look, but making it more autumnal by using blacks and browns mixed in-

Images found from http://www.vogue.co.uk/brand/clements-ribeiro

The designers use pops of bright colour- reds and oranges, mixed in with browns and blacks to give a darker (toned down) version of Eastern fashion- which is usually bright. they have still kept intricate patterns- which seem to have an African influence in the Left pictures. and the right pictures seem more influenced by china- the Kimono type coat and the traditional flower print, again toning it down by introducing a lot of black.

Eastern promise research

Heres some research from WGSN for eastern fashion- its current for this years S/S but i need to see if i can find any predictions to back up my idea that the Eastern trend will come back in A/W 14
My only backup so far is the colour palette prediction from WGSN for A/W 14-
Because as you can see here- the red and gold would fit perfectly with eastern culture and the beige and dark tones would go, with mixing in some traditional autumnal colours.

Pastel Research

Found this prediction on WGSN for pastel colour themes- although it is predicted for A/W 14 I will take this information and apply it to my prediction for a S/S 14 trend (without the use of greys and dark tones)

I like the use of washed out pastels for S/S- bleached denim and washed out colour will be big for spring and summer 14

Cultural Brailing (14/3/13)

Cross Cultural Analysis
Cross cultural analysis is watching both cultures and industries for signs that an idea or trend is beginning.  If the idea or trend emerges within a culture and in industry it is very likely to become both long-term and highly influential.

A forecaster has to open and browse information and media on a daily basis, as well as regularly visiting exhibitions and trade fairs for everything from fashion to cars to interiors, technology etc.  Using websites such as Trendwatching, The Cool Hunter, Cool Hunting, WGSN, Lifestyle News Global, the David Report, or PSFK help with this process.  However a good forecaster will not just rely on the internet, they will use all their resources such as magazines, newspapers, journals, books etc. covering everything from fashion, design, architecture, graphics, technology, clubbing, leisure, music, finance, medicine, literature, the arts, gaming, and economics among others.  In other words all aspects of culture where “stuff” is present and where a trend could emerge.

Cultural Brailling – Faith Popcorn
“Cultural Brailling” is a term created by American Forecaster Faith Popcorn.  Popcorn and her trend forecasting organization BrainReserve, have been using this technique since the 1980’s to detect and track changes in the way consumers live.

“Brailling is a way of communicating language through bumps on a page.  We take that same technique here and feel the bumps in culture.  The bumps are everything.  Again it is about using all of your senses: things that you see, things that you taste, things that you hear.  For example, it could be a matter of walking into a retail store and noticing the lighting, the music, feeling the different textures, just fully immersing yourself into whatever environment that you are in”
Susan Choi, Trend Track director at BrainReserve.

Brailling is about being hyper observant and alert to newness.  You have to reach out for new “stuff” in professions, societies, countries, or industries (automotive, beauty, fashion, architecture, medicine, technology, biotech, stem cell etc.) that you may have no real knowledge of, or interest in.

Brailling is all consuming, something you must do wherever you are and whoever you are with.

To understand anything you must ask questions.  Who started the trend, where it came from, why it is emerging and when it was first noted.  Basic questions but without knowing the answers it is difficult to ground a trend.

If possible seek out the innovator, without the ‘who’ it is difficult to determine the importance or relevance of the ‘what’ and whether or not it is likely to cascade into a trend.
The ‘what’ is about the “stuff”, trend, innovation, or cultural shift being identified.  The ‘where’ is the place the trend began within society or culturally.  ‘Why’ did the trend emerge this is often to do with society issues such as economical, social, financial, etc.  The ‘when’ is hard to pinpoint but looking back it is clearer.  There are periods within history of the world that seam random, but we now know that bursts of creativity or innovation can be tracked back to moments within a society or a culture when ‘Innovators’ and ‘Early Adapters’ were more connected and communicating with each other within cities, clubs, sectors, socially, scientific and artistic communities.

Street style magazine mock up

Heres my magazine mock up inspired by what I found in look magazine. I used big pictures so that the outfits where the main focus of the article. I also featured a question, the answer, What key points the person had to say and what I thought of there style!

Makeup trend- red lips

RED! How to wear red lipstick and what shade suits your skin tone. I know from experience that different tones of red suit different skin tones. I personally prefer a dark red as im pale with blonde hair. And very rich reds dont suit me. Use this from look magazine to make your own choice :)

Street style

Here is an example of how to lay out my street style from look magazine. I like how the picture is the main focus so you are able to show the outfit clearly, and there is a comment from both the person wearing the outfit  and from the editor. I plan to do a mock up of my street style in this way

Trend board ideas

So currently on my pinterest I have a few ideas for my final boards for S/S and A/W 14

- Eastern Promise for A/W 14 - bringing in rich colours inspired by middle eastern culture. rich reds and dark tones will be important for A/W

- Pastels for S/S 14, these are already making an appearance in 2013 but are set to continue into next year. Pastel colours will be important in fashion, hair and beauty trends and also home style.

- Industrial pattern A/W- using a lot of metallics and blacks, along with geometric patterns

Im thinking about doing the first 2. because I love pastel colours and also eastern style. so i think this will be perfect for me! also i think i could use some of the information i gained at London fashion weekend, as the dollhouse trend links with the pastel trend, and middle eastern fashion was shown on the catwalk!!!

News!

Saw this in the metro today. Its a phone that uses your eyes to scroll down the page. I thought it was amazing! But can you imagine how many problems that could have? Turning the page when you look away to speak to someone. I think I would have to see it to believe that it could work! But a technological advance none the less.
